This is general information, not medical advice. Your hospital or birth center may have its own recommended list and its own rules about what to bring — check with them. If you have signs of labor, follow your provider's instructions on when to come in.

When to pack

Aim to have your bag ready by around 36 weeks. The NHS suggests packing at least about three weeks before your due date, since babies don't always wait. Keep it somewhere you can grab on the way out, and tell your birth partner where it is.

For your birth partner

A quick note before you go

Knowing when to leave matters as much as what you pack. If you're not sure whether it's time, see when to go to the hospital in labor and the 5-1-1 rule, and call your provider — that's always the right move.

Frequently asked questions

When should I pack my hospital bag?

A good rule of thumb is to have your bag packed by around 36 weeks — the NHS suggests at least about 3 weeks before your due date — so you're ready if your baby arrives early. Keep it somewhere easy to grab.

What should I pack in my hospital bag for labor?

Bring your ID and maternity notes or birth plan, comfortable loose clothing, toiletries, phone and charger, snacks and a drink, going-home clothes for you and the baby, newborn essentials like bodysuits and nappies, and an approved car seat for the trip home. Your hospital may also provide its own list — check with them.

What documents do I need to bring to the hospital?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance or hospital registration details, your maternity notes or hospital records, and your birth plan if you have one. Having pre-registration done ahead of time can speed up admission.
